Southwest Airlines Carry-on Pets Policy

  • Small, vaccinated domestic cats and dogs are allowed in airline-approved pet carriers in the cabin on domestic flights.
  • Pet carriers must be stowed under your seat for the duration of the flight.
  • Specific requirements may apply for customers traveling to Puerto Rico.
  • Please note that Southwest does not accept pets on flights to or from Hawaii.
  • It’s recommended to make a reservation for your pet in advance, as Southwest accepts pets on a first-come, first-served basis until they reach their six-carrier capacity.

Service Animals

Southwest Airlines accepts fully trained service animals to assist individuals with physical and/or mental disabilities. Only dogs are accepted as trained service animals. If you’re traveling with a trained service animal, you must check in with a Ticket Counter or Gate Agent and present the required Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation form.

Southwest also accepts fully trained law enforcement dogs and search-and-rescue dogs for transportation, without charge, when accompanied by their respective handlers on official business.
